Finca Los Altos is located in the Jinotega region of Nicaragua. The farm is owned by Erwin Mierisch, our longest standing direct trade partner and his family. We visited Los Altos again in February during our sourcing trip to Central America. The first thing you notice about the Mierisch family is their drive to producing ever better coffee. Even after being awarded fifth place at the 2010 Cup of Excellence they didn’t stop looking to the future. New ways of pruning, experiments in varieties and processing mean that every year as winter ends and we taste the newest Los Altos crop we’re tasting the best the farm has ever been. And every year it’s incredible.

As well as their dedication to producing amazing coffee, the Mierisch family are hugely committed to the welfare of the workers and the environment. Erwin’s sister Eleane runs a health programme that provides free dental and medical care to the full time staff that live on site. They also have a community general store on the farm that sells everything at cost price to both their workers and surrounding community.
