  • Carmen Lúcia "Usha" was born and raised on Fazenda Caxambu, and after years in Rio de Janeiro pursuing an academic career, she returned to the region to continue her parents’ coffee legacy. Determined to honour their hard work, she took over the management of the farm and introduced a new vision focused on specialty coffee. With a dedication to quality and a strong emphasis on education, Usha transformed the farm into a centre for innovation, encouraging her team to embrace both technical expertise and passion.

At Origin, we dedicate March to celebrating and championing the incredible women who make our coffee possible. We believe that every purchase we make is a chance to make a difference. By showcasing coffees sourced from women producers, we can directly support their economic empowerment and contribute to a more equitable coffee industry. This ripple effect extends beyond individual businesses, strengthening entire communities and creating opportunities for future generations of women in coffee. Throughout this month, we’ll be devoting our feature coffee calendar exclusively to female producers and recognising some of the brilliant women in our coffee community.

Origin

Origin

The world’s largest coffee producer, Brazil has huge influence in the global coffee market. Although producing more than a third of the world’s coffee, the growing conditions here can be challenging; producers not only have to manage the lower-than-optimal altitudes and non-volcanic soils, but also extreme climate conditions, from drought, to frost. Typically low in acidity, sweet, and heavy-bodied, Brazillian coffee is often easily distinguished and well-loved thanks to its approachable, desirable notes of chocolate and nuts.
