Winds of Change: Regenerative Packaging
As we prepare to launch our Sail Ship coffee, we’re recognising people and projects who aren’t afraid to do things differently, for the good of the planet.
Notpla
Since 2014, Notpla has been reimagining packaging by developing innovative solutions that work with the environment, not against it. Their inception, and significant growth since, is a direct response to the growing awareness and demand for truly sustainable alternatives to conventional plastics, and Notpla have focused their efforts on unlocking the potential of seaweed-based technology. Notpla's story serves as a compelling example of how businesses, driven by a clear environmental mission and supported by an aligned network, can be powerful catalysts for positive change. To-date, Notpla have displaced 18 million single-use plastics, with 10 million of those happening in 2024 alone, and they’re not slowing down any time soon.

Redefining Design
Notpla's mission is clear: to replace single-use plastics with sustainable, naturally derived alternatives that don't leave a trace. Seaweed is a readily available, fast-growing natural resource that forms the foundation of their regenerative packaging designs, along with other plant matter. These forests in our seas require no freshwater, land or fertilser and grown in abundance only positively impacts its surrounding wildlife. From seaweed-coated takeaway packaging to edible liquid bubbles and film sachets, Notpla’s innovations provide real-world solutions for food, drinks, and many everyday packaging items. Each product, whether edible, compostable, or water-soluble, is designed to return to nature harmlessly.
“The more applications we solve, the more waste we eliminate.”
Community Value
Engaged collaboration is the cornerstone of any widespread change. Notpla do not view their success as isolated; rather part of a larger movement towards a more sustainable future. With the support of a network of conscious businesses, policymakers, climate initiatives, and engaged consumers, Notpla amplifies its impact and contributes to a broader shift in consumer behaviour and industry practices. Hungry to support systemic change, they share an open invitation with any industry that has a need for a packaging solution to join them in their ongoing research and development of new applications and prototypes.
