Coffee Prices are Rising, but Why?
Coffee Prices in 2025
Global supply and demand issues have driven coffee prices up significantly over the past year, impacting individuals and businesses across the entire industry, from producers to consumers, in both speciality and commodity markets. In order to maintain the quality and standard of sourcing practices that we and our community value, we must adapt.
As a result, from March 1st, the price of our coffee will change on our website, in our retail shops, and for our wholesale partners.
What's behind the cost increase?
The following factors are contributing to the rising coffee prices in both commodity and speciality markets:
- CLIMATE CHANGE
There have been significant reductions in coffee yields across major producing regions like Brazil and Colombia. Producers face challenges such as unpredictable weather patterns, droughts, frosts, and floods, which decrease the supply of coffee, and therefore drive up the cost.
- RISING PRODUCTION COSTS
The cost for production shows no sign of slowing down; farmers are now faced with increasing expenses across labour, fertilisers and energy needed to produce and process coffee. All of these factors ultimately drive the cost of coffee higher, in order to fairly compensate the farmers behind them.
- LOGISTICAL CHALLENGES
It’s no secret that businesses globally are facing challenges with their supply chains, and coffee is no different. Issues like container shortages, increased fuel pricing and unexpected disruption directly impact the costs involved with coffee logistics.
- GROWING DEMAND
The demand for high-quality, ethically sourced coffee continues to grow. While we’re pleased to see this trend in the industry, this increases competition for already very limited supplies of premium lots; naturally driving up the pricing. Where there is less supply and availability, the price drives up a higher benchmark with demand.
How is the commodity market connected to Origin’s Direct Trade relationships?
While Origin’s direct trade relationships prioritise fair pricing and quality over commodity market fluctuations, our direct trade partners are still impacted by rising global costs. We continue to adjust the prices we pay to our direct trade producers, to ensure fair compensation for labour, sustainability efforts, and exceptional coffee. Origin continues to ensure long-lasting partnerships which reward quality and sustainability, strengthening the supply chain in a way that benefits producers and customers alike.
