Ilomba is a small mill and outside the village where it gets its name. The village is not far from Zambia, in the south west corner of Tanzania. The highlands in this region have the ability to produce incredible coffee.
The mill begun operations with the assistance of Technoserve, a business development company who have helped set up some of Ethiopia’s most efficient mills. The mill went through some rapid changes when Technoserve’s support ended, leading to the creation of a self-sustaining, co-operative system. Through this journey they have created some of Tanzania’s best coffee.
The 24 producers involved with Ilomba share a similar story to many others in East Africa. They’re smallholders who have the time, care and energy to pick coffee at its peak and carefully manage it. The kent varietal featured here originates from 1920s India and is known for its hearty and delicious flavour.
